For those looking to hone their leadership abilities for the purpose of impacting athletes, our coaching minor is the perfect supplement to grow the unique skill set required for coaching. As the need for sports leadership in high schools grows across the country, it also provides an advantage to those pursuing degrees in education.
The goal of the Coaching minor is to provide students a foundation of movement sciences and psychological aspects involved in sport leadership.
The Coaching minor is primarily designed for students desiring courses which will enhance their ability to coach various team and individual sports. Many students who pursue the Coaching minor are obtaining teacher certifications in programs such as English, History, Math, and Social Science.
Coaching Minor Requirements
Students majoring in Exercise Science or Fitness, Recreation & Sports Management cannot minor in Coaching. This minor is only for HSU students in majors outside of the Department of Kinesiology, Health & Recreation.
*Biology 2402 Human Anatomy and Physiology I or BIOL 2410 Essentials of Human Anatomy and Physiology is prerequisite for KINE 3314.

Growing Demand
Employment of coaches and scouts is projected to grow 12 percent from 2019 to 2029, much faster than the average for all occupations. Rising participation in high school and college sports should increase demand for coaches and scouts.
High School Growth
High school enrollment is projected to increase over the next decade, resulting in a rise in the number of student athletes. As schools offer more athletic programs and as more students participate in sports, the demand for coaches may increase.
College Growth
Participation in college sports also is projected to increase over the next decade, particularly at smaller colleges and in women’s sports. Many small, Division III colleges are expanding their sports programs and adding new teams as a way to help promote the school and recruit potential students.
Outcomes
Students pursuing other majors may also find this minor advantageous in the preparation of entry level coaching content in youth sport leagues and sport ministry. Coaching minors may find careers in private and public education, youth sport, sport ministry, and private practice as sport specific training coaches.
